What anxiety can look like

The washing up is done, the emails are answered, everyone thinks you’re fine, your body hasn’t got the memo.

That’s often what anxiety actually looks like. Not the dramatic version, the racing heart in a crisis, but the quieter one that sits underneath an ordinary Tuesday. The bracing before your phone rings, the mental rehearsal of conversations that haven’t happened yet. The particular tiredness of a body that never quite believes it’s safe to stop.

You’ve probably got very good at hiding it, good at getting things done anyway, and still, somewhere underneath the competence, something in you is on watch.

Where Anxiety Comes From

Anxiety often makes more sense when we look at what may have shaped it and how it shows up in your life now. What once felt like protection can sometimes continue long after the original reasons are no longer present.

Then…

Anxiety rarely starts out of nowhere. Somewhere along the way, staying alert paid off. Maybe it was a household where things could turn quickly, and noticing the mood before anyone else did kept you safer. Maybe it was being the reliable one, the one who couldn’t afford to get things wrong, so you learned to check, and check again, and stay a step ahead of whatever might go wrong next.

Maybe there’s no single moment you can point to at all, just years of circumstances that taught your nervous system vigilance was worth the effort.

Now…

This is often where it shows up. Worst case scenarios rehearsed before you’ve even decided whether there’s a real problem. A calm exterior sitting over something permanently braced underneath it.

Rest that doesn’t actually feel restful, because your body won’t fully let go even when there’s nothing left to do. Being told you overthink things so often that you’ve quietly started to believe it yourself. Managing everyone else’s stress fluently while your own goes largely unnoticed, including by you.

None of that means you’re broken, or too much, or bad at coping. It means a nervous system that once needed to stay alert hasn’t yet been given a good enough reason to stand down.

What that means for anxiety counselling in Derby

I’m not going to try and talk you out of your anxiety, or hand you a worksheet of positive thoughts to replace the anxious ones. Anxiety rarely responds well to being argued with, and if that worked, you’d probably have done it yourself by now.

Instead, the work is slower and more honest than that. We spend time actually understanding what your anxiety is doing and why, what it’s still protecting you from, what happens in your body a half second before your thoughts even catch up. As a person-centred counsellor, I don’t bring a fixed programme to that, there’s no set number of weeks or a tick box process to work through. It’s your pace, and it stays that way throughout.

People often ask whether this is the same as CBT, it isn’t. CBT tends to work directly with thoughts and behaviours in a structured, often time limited way. This is different, less about correcting the thinking, more about understanding the pattern underneath it, so change happens because something’s actually shifted, not because you’ve learned to override yourself more successfully.

People also ask whether they need to know what’s causing the anxiety before they start, you don’t. Plenty of people arrive with no clear cause in mind at all, and working that out is often part of what happens here, not a prerequisite for beginning.

How I Work

Sessions run online, in person here in Derby, or by telephone, whichever feels most possible for you to start with. There’s no fixed length of work either, some people come for a specific stretch, others stay longer as things unfold, and we’ll keep checking in on what’s actually useful rather than sticking to a plan made before we’d even met.

Everything shared is confidential, in line with NCPS ethical guidelines, with the usual limits around safeguarding that apply to all counselling.

You don’t need the right words, or a tidy account of what’s wrong, to get in touch. That’s not what a first conversation is for, it’s simply a chance to talk about what’s going on and see whether working together feels right, with nothing you’re committing to beyond that first conversation itself.
